1234 Coordination Drill

Hey Tribe!

As you know, we cover the 1234 drill in “The Bridge” course. It’s a very handy coordination drill. I love “The 123-234” and “The 123-234 Twist”. You probably remember those little dudes. If you don’t jump back on them!

The 1234 drill is a simple chromatic scale but it’s a great coordination drill. I’m here to tell you Tribe… the 1234 Drills can really help you with coordination issues and it helps make the fingers stronger.

Now that’s a “given”… It’s a NO BRAINER!

But… Did you ever think how much it can help your picking hand?

I’ve given you some suggestions to consider and TRY. Keyword… TRY!  Put it to use for one week and then tell me what you think. I know you’ll love what happens.

It should also be mentioned that it’s always a great idea to experiment around with throwing the chromatic in a lick.

Let’s say your wailing away in “The Cowboy Blues” (you have that – it’s in “The Bridge). Try taking any of the strings in the scale/lesson and actually do a 1234 on it and continue on with the run through the rest of the lick in the Cowboy Blues lesson. IT sounds killer. I’m sure some expert is sitting out there with some TECHNO-THEORY-CUNFUSO term for it. I don’t. I just know it works.

We wear this stuff out in “Full Blown” and pull out tons of amazing things.

Here’s a few ideas for you…

– Practice all down strokes for a few minutes (Make sure you do it “clean” – no dead strings or notes)

– Next practice all up strokes for a few minutes (Make sure you do it “clean” – no dead strings or notes)

– Next practice up and down (alternate picking) for a few minutes… clean!!!

– Next practice picking one note and then hammer or pull off everything else in the pattern you are working on

– Finally, practice a pattern (say 1,4,2,3) by doing it on the Top E string, then skip a string

This will help even the best player become more coordinated! Guaranteed!

PS…

Just the other day, a member of the Tribe sent in his suggestion on the simple 1234 drill and I’d like to share with it with you.

“Hi everyone! Another exercise really useful is to make every possible combination of 1-2-3-4, just as Jerry does (or on your guitar neck, from the first to the 12th space, up and down). There are 24 possibles combination, some easy ones like 1-2-3-4 or 1-2-4-3, but there are some hard ones like 4-2-3-1. Try to use a metronome and try them all! Have fun!” – Roberto

… Thanks Roberto for your input!
